Ceiling Light Removal Guide: Step-by-Step for Different Types

Is your ceiling light malfunctioning? Here’s how to safely remove four common types:

1. Round Ceiling Lights

  • Step 1: Cut power at the source. Safety first!
  • Step 2: Locate and unscrew the 3 small screws around the metal ring securing the lampshade using a screwdriver. Gently twist and remove the shade.
  • Step 3: Carefully remove the bulb(s).

2. Recessed Ceiling Lights

  • Step 1: Turn off the power supply. Essential!
  • Step 2: Look for the spring clips holding the fixture. You’ll typically find them on opposite sides. Squeeze or push these clips inward to release the light unit.
  • Step 3: Gently lower the fixture and disconnect the wiring (if necessary for full removal).
  • 3. Aluminum Panel Ceiling Lights (Common in Drop Ceilings)
  • Step 1: Cut the power.
  • Step 2: Insert a small flat-head screwdriver or thin blade into the seam near one corner of the light panel. Gently pry it down.
  • Step 3: Carefully lower the panel/light unit. Access the bulb(s) from above or within the unit.

4. Rectangular Ceiling Lights

  • Step 1: Turn off the power.
  • Step 2: Removing the shade often requires working from all four corners. Use suction cup hooks (like those for handling glass panels) attached to the aluminum frame. Apply even downward pressure on all corners simultaneously until the shade releases.
  • Step 3: Remove the bulb(s).

Key Safety Reminder: Always confirm the power is OFF before attempting any light fixture removal!
